Cast out of her family three years ago, Mara turned to the only place that would take her—a school where students train to protect others. But Mara is stunned when guarding a noble girl in the Empire’s capital turns out to be more dangerous than she could’ve imagined. More shocking still, she finds the boy she thought she had lost forever outside the gates of her new home.
Mara knew her life in the dizzying Imperial city would hold dangers. How could she have known that her heart, as well as her life, would be at stake?
Empire of Shadows will take readers on a spellbinding journey into the world Miriam Forster first introduced in City of a Thousand Dolls—a world with a divided society, deadly courtiers, heroic traitors, and deeply laid conspiracies.

Miriam Forster did a great job with the first book in this series. I actually thought the second book was even better. The heroin, Mara, was very likable and was one tough cookie to mess with if you got on her bad side. She was loyal to the people she cared about, made it through a lot and was an overall strong protagonist. The character strength in this installment made it that much more enjoyable, and the writing even stronger than before as well.
As in most cases, the love interest impressed me and was a kind person who was willing to wait for her and their relationship. He always treated her well and was just a general hottie. Enough said.
I’ve been overall really impressed with these books and the plot twists have been great to follow. Getting into the story lines has been easy and I’ve really enjoyed reading Forster’s work, and am even more excited to read more from her.
I’d recommend this series if you’re looking for a different type of fantasy. In some ways it’s reminded me of the Divergent series with the society's almost cult like ways sometimes, especially in the first book of this series. The ending was great in my opinion and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for this bunch of characters as the stories progress.
