Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Reasons to Shop Indie

One
Because independent bookstore buyers personally meet with sales representitives from each publishing house to discuss what books are most anticipated and why.

Two
Because each bookstore offers a slightly different inventory of books depending on its readership and its employees' personal choices.

Three
Because independent bookstore employees personally read as many of the books in their store as possible, in advance, to recommend to you.

Four
Because independent bookstores can know you by name, what books you like, and keep you updated on new releases tailored to your personal interests.

Five
Because independent bookstores will spend time finding the right book for you

Six
Because each independent bookstore has its own aesthetic and vibe. Barnes & Noble is corporate and similar and Amazon is removed and impersonal.

Seven
Because buying from the independent bookstore supports the local economy.

Eight
Because independent bookstores offer you a chance to feel the book and see it for yourself. Instead of online, like Amazon.

Nine
Because independent bookstores allow you to stumble upon books you might not otherwise consider.

Ten
Because an independent bookstore offers its city a certain vibe it can't get any other way. And let's face it, they're awesome.

Do you shop indie sometimes or all the time? Why or why not?

  1. I wish there were more indie bookstores near me, but there just aren't. Sometimes, I drive the 20 minutes (each way) to go to Changing Hands in Tempe, Arizona, but a lot of times I just buy books from Amazon (don't hate me!). Changing Hands is a wonderful store, though, where you get very personal and friendly service. I just wish it were closer!

    1. That's great! I'm no stranger to Amazon. Before I worked at the store, I was definitely an Amazon buyer. And still sometimes am! Everything in moderation, right? I've always wanted to visit Changing Hands...they have the best author events!

  2. I have an amazing indie store next to me. I hate the prices, because of Amazon, but whenever I can, I usually try to buy paperbacks because they're usually the same price. I have to support my local indie because they bring in some really amazing authors into town.

  3. Love your take on it! I shop a combo of Indie, B&N, and Amazon (the latter strictly for ebooks, since I have a Kindle, and bargain books under $5), and I definitely love to support bookstores as much as humanly possible. They're my happy place :)

  4. I LOVE shopping Indie bookstores, but sadly there's only one in my area and it's downtown...somewhere that we rarely go to!
There's one indie store in New Hampshire, that I love going to! It's so sweet and just ADORABLE! But we only go up there when we go on vacation... :'(
I really love our B&N though! And I end up going there a lot!
Great post! You definitely will convince people who don't shop indies, to do it!
